One is solid, the other isn’t.

All kidding aside, they mean the same thing – to signify the end of a proof. Some texts use the former and others the latter. I use ◼\blacksquare in my notes.

For the record. I’ve never noticed either before. I mean I guess I’ve seen them in books but I never gave them any thought. I honestly could not make any heads or tails out of the question.

@Gurjinder: I one looked into a book on fractal geometry by G A Edgar where the ends of the proofs were marked by smiley faces. You certainly do have options! 🙂
